CRANBERRY TWP Ken KD Walker has a background in both hockey and law enforcement, both of which helped him get on the ice for the 2024 Can-Am Police-Fire Games hockey tournament at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry Township.

The Butler Township resident knew the hockey portion of the Can-Am Games would be held this month and began looking for a team to join.

Walker is a retired Pennsylvania police officer who served 25 years in Chambersburg, Meadville, Butler and Hampton Township. He has connections with law enforcement throughout the state, including Tim Cutshaw, a player for the Lancaster Fighting Amish, one of the eight participating teams.

About a month ago I asked him if I could join the team for this tournament and he said that would be no problem, Walker said. I have been involved with the state police travel hockey team for 27 years. We have traveled to the northeastern United States and Canada.

Walker, 56, looks like a real defender.

I'm 6'2″ tall, and that's without skates, he said. I'm also the oldest player in the tournament. For me, it's twofold. We've played eight games in three days here, and it's important for me to still be able to compete with these younger guys, but also the camaraderie that we have, just because of our backgrounds, is very strong.

The Amish went 4-1-1 Friday and Saturday, good enough to get them into the championship game Sunday against Essex, the only team from Canada in the tournament. Essex cruised to the title with a 7-0 victory.

Lancaster had already lost 10-1 to Essex on Friday during the round-robin portion of the tournament.

It’s obvious they’ve all played some form of hockey at a higher level, said Chad Allen, another defenseman for the Amish, from Essex. You can see it in their skill, awareness and communication. They’re always talking to each other on the ice.

A few of us play together in competitions, but especially for this tournament we were not able to train once.

Hockey is not as big in our area as it is closer to Philadelphia or here in Pittsburgh. There are not many high school teams. If kids want to play near Lancaster, they usually have to join a travel team.

Walker, who now works as a school police officer at Mars and Freeport schools, became fascinated with hockey while growing up in the Stanton Heights neighborhood of Pittsburgh.

It started with roller hockey, he said. We played on the tennis courts. I eventually went to North Catholic High School for ice hockey and then was on the first hockey team at Mercyhurst College in 1986.

He plays in several adult leagues at the Lemieux Complex and skates every two weeks at the Frozen Pond at Valencia to stay in shape.

Walker said he's been able to connect with his teammates easily over the past three days.

The bond we have with law enforcement brings us all together, he said.

The Pittsburgh Fire won the bronze medal in the tournament, while the Blueliners finished fourth.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
