The 2024 college football season is just over a month away, but the Fresno State Bulldogs find themselves in an unenviable position after Jeff Tedford announced he would step down due to health issues. It is the second time Tedford has left Fresno State due to health issues. He coached the team from 2017-2019, then returned to coach the team again in 2022 and 2023. Tedford led the program to nine or more wins in four of his five seasons with the Bulldogs and will now hand the reins to Tim Skipper, who was the associate head coach and linebackers coach and a former Fresno State linebacker.
Athletic Director Garrett Klassy will evaluate Skipper and several other candidates to become Fresno State's long-term football coach. One name the BarkBoard staff has identified as a potential target if Skipper doesn’t keep the job long-term is Arizona State offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo. He never coached at Fresno State, but he’s a Tedford disciple, coaching with him for two seasons at California and serving as his quarterbacks coach in his lone NFL season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Arroyo was a former quarterback at San Jose State, where he threw for 4,672 yards and 28 touchdowns during his career. He went on to serve as an assistant at his alma mater and had stints at Cal, Southern Miss, Oklahoma State and Oregon before accepting the head coaching job at UNLV.
