Oval Invincibles beat Birmingham Phoenix by 45 runs at The Oval to open the 2024 Hundred season.
Paige Scholfield (71 from 40 balls) and England international Alice Capsey (52 from 40) both hit fifties to help the Invincibles score 150-5 from their 100 balls after being put to bat at the toss.

Phoenix capitalized on the five penalty runs they were awarded early in their response, with Marizanne Kapp penalized for “dangerous play” after throwing the ball back to Suzie Bates when she repeated her reaction.
A furious Kapp (1-21) returned shortly afterwards to bowl Bates for six, while Ellyse Perry was run out for a duck after some excellent work from Capsey, and Sterre Kalis (17) was bowled the next ball by Ryana MacDonald-Gay (1-11).

The Phoenix chase never really got going again, with Amanda-Jade Wellington (3-9) taking the lower order by three wickets – including England's Amy Jones for 21 – as the visitors were eventually bowled out for 105 in 92 balls.

Earlier, Katie Levick (1-16) claimed the first wicket of the 2024 tournament when she beat Invincibles captain Lauren Winfield-Hill for 12 wickets.
Scholfield quickly hit a half-century off 28 balls after scoring four consecutive boundaries courtesy of Sophie Devine, while Capsey benefited from scoring two consecutive deliveries when she was on 32.
Emily Arlott was the first culprit, creating a good catch-and-bowl chance, while Issy Wong converted the second with a deep square-leg.

Arlott (2-19) made up for it somewhat with the wickets of Kapp (7) and Laura Harris (0) from successive balls to complete a hat-trick, which Mady Villiers safely blocked.
Despite the somewhat stuttering finish, it was already a test for Invincibles against a Phoenix team that failed to win a single game last year… and they begin the 2024 season with another heavy defeat.

Paige Scholfield was rightly named Player of the Match, setting the tone with her 71 runs from 40 balls as the Invincibles' opening batswoman.
The 28-year-old hit 12 boundaries in her enterprising knock, including four in a row against Sophie Devine, shortly before reaching her half-century from 29 balls.

Sky Sports' Stuart Broad said of Scholfield's knock: “Hugely impressive.
“Especially as an inexperienced opening batsman, to set the tone, maybe for the whole tournament.
“She took the Oval Invincibles above par with her passing game. She was particularly strong in the offside, finding the boundary with ease.”
What's next?
The Hundred will continue on Wednesday as Southern bravery to take upon oneself London spirit.
The women's match is live on Sky Sports Cricket from 2.30pm BST, with kick-off at 3pm BST. You can also stream the match on the Sky Sports app and YouTube. The Brave are the reigning 2023 champions.
The men's clash will be live from 6pm, ahead of the match that starts at 6:30pm. Brave was the winner of the men's competition in the first season in 2021.
