WINSTON-SALEM, NC- Webb Simpson, a former Wake Forest golfer, was selected by 2025 Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley to become vice-captain at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, for the 45th Ryder Cup next fall.
Simpson represented Team USA six times, including three times in the Ryder Cup (2012, 2014 and 2018).
“Webb is someone I have long admired and respected as a competitor and friend,” Bradley said in a statement. “He brings a wealth of team golf experience and knows what it takes to win. Webb will be a valuable member of our leadership team and a trusted resource to me as we prepare for Bethpage Black in September.”
After a 4-4-1 record in his Ryder Cup career, this is the first time Simpson has been named vice-captain.
“I am honored that Keegan has chosen me to serve as Vice Captain in 2025,” Simpson said. “Competing in three Ryder Cups will forever be one of my career highlights. I have no doubt that Keegan will be a fantastic captain and a tremendous leader, and I can't wait to get started as we try to win back the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.”
As a Demon Deacon, Simpson was named the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2005 and has been named to the All-ACC team three more times since. He helped lead Wake Forest to the 2005 NCAA East Regional Championship and was instrumental in the Deacs' run to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championship that year, as well as two other NCAA Championship appearances.
The North Carolina native is a seven-time winner on the PGA TOUR, including a victory at the 2012 U.S. Open. He was also a member of the winning U.S. teams in the 2011, '13 and '19 Presidents Cup.
How the Ryder Cup Works
The Ryder Cup is played in odd-numbered years between 12-member teams from the United States and Europe. It consists of five match-play sessions played over three days.
The US team consists of the top six players eligible for the points ranking, with six captain's picks. The European team consists of the top three players eligible for the European points ranking, the top three players eligible for the world points ranking, and six captain's picks.
Each of the first two days consists of one session of four matches of four-ball and one session of four matches of foursomes. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches.
Each match is worth one point, and matches that end in a tie are worth points for each side. The first team to reach 14 points wins the Ryder Cup. If the matches end in a 14-14 tie, the team holding the Ryder Cup retains it.
