One of the world's oldest cricket clubs bans sixes to manage risk | Analysis
A cricket club has banned players from hitting six-hole courses following complaints from neighbouring properties about damage and injuries.
Southwick and Shoreham Cricket Club, founded in 1790, has reportedly received complaints from neighbours that windows of houses, cars and sheds were in the line of fire during matches.
A six means that a batter has hit the ball hard enough to go out of bounds without first hitting the ground. This means that he has scored a maximum of six runs.
Although the club has put up nets, batters have been told that the first six strikes will count as zero runs and they will be out if this happens again during their innings.
Mark Broxup, the club's treasurer, was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying: We have taken the proactive decision to ban six-a-side events at the stadium following a number of incidents in the past where cars, houses and even roofs have been damaged.
We didn't want to have to pay high insurance costs or have legal claims made against us, so we thought it would be wise to do this.
The measure has been met with much criticism from players, with one saying: Today, it's all about health and safety and insurance companies charge a fortune to compensate sports clubs for accidental damage or injury to bystanders.

The club responded in a Facebook post saying other measures have been put in place to manage the risks, including moving men's matches and 20-over cricket to another venue where sixes are not banned.
However, for juniors and women, the ban still applies with a six-hit ban.
The statement read: Southwick & Shoreham Cricket Club proactively moved the league and 20-over games to Buckingham Park some time ago, investing £25k in the process. This decision was made to respect our neighbours and mitigate any potential risk.
Speaking on the Jeremy Vine Show, club chairman Des ODell said: It's something that's developed over a number of years. The club has been around since 1790. In 1790 it was a very different environment and over the years obviously more and more houses have been built.
In 2018 we decided to move our 20-over teams because the equipment is better, the bats hit further and the players are fitter and stronger.
We have retained our junior teams at Southwick Green, as the area is ideal for junior teams. We also have our ladies team, the Southwick Sheilas, playing there. We also have a group of men of a certain age who don’t hit the ball as far or as hard.
He adds that the rule was largely introduced because visiting teams come in and start hitting sixes. The new ban is intended to discourage that and to protect and respect neighbours.
He concluded: When you see the ground, it is very clear that there is a risk that you will cause damage. We want to take responsibility and we want to be able to get along with our neighbors.
