Valdosta community mourns loss of soccer star
VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) – Vincent Sweet Pea Burns, originally from Valdosta, recently passed away at the age of 43.
Sweet Pea was just larger than life…not just a great football player, but a great person, a great teammate…and just a natural born leader. It was devastating news for the entire Lowndes community, said Danny Redshaw, athletic director for Lowndes County Schools.
Burns, nicknamed Sweet Pea by his family, friends and teammates, was part of the 1999 Lowndes High Vikings football team that brought the winning streak back to the Lowndes High Vikings football program.
We were just starting to learn how to win by competing with all the big guys. He was such a big part of that. And the legacy that not only he left behind, but the whole team, restored the winning tradition that had been here before, Redshaw said.
After graduating from Lowndes High School, Burns attended the University of Kentucky.
The football program remembered Burns on their X account, saying he was well-liked by his teammates and known for his cheerful personality.
He was drafted in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts, but his mark on his hometown team has never been forgotten.
“Just a great young man and I think his legacy will last forever here at Lowndes,” Redshaw said.
WALB spoke with Burns' daughter as they are still making plans and arrangements for the funeral.
