Men's tennis wins ITA academic awards
TEMPE, Ariz. Once again, the Belmont University men’s tennis program has been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for its exceptional commitment to academics. The Bruins, who achieved the highest team GPA of any Belmont men’s program in 2023-24, have been named to the ITA All-Academic Team. Additionally, six Bruins have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes.
The ITA announced earlier this week that it will annually recognize teams and student-athletes who exceed expectations in the classroom.
To earn ITA All-Academic Team status, a program must maintain a team GPA of 3.2 or higher (on a 4.00 scale). All enrolled student-athletes must be listed on the Institutional Eligibility Form and all varsity letter winners must be included in the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year. To be listed as an ITA Scholar-Athlete, student-athletes must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year and be listed on the Institutional Eligibility Form.
Belmont achieved a remarkable team GPA of 3.73 for the second consecutive academic year in 2023-24.
On the court, the Bruins were just as impressive as Belmont captured its third consecutive regular-season conference championship by winning the Horizon League South Division title. By completing another undefeated conference season (5-0) this spring, the Bruins extended their conference winning streak to 19.
Nearly every Belmont player on the 2023-24 roster claimed ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, including Ruben Busch (business management), Diego Castro (management), Ian Cruz (business management), Thomas Luis (business management), Gabriel Sardo (business systems and analytics) and Alfred Wallin (business management).
Cruz, Luis and Sardo were also College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District postseason selections, and Cruz and Luis garnered Horizon League All-Academic honors. All three maintained cumulative GPAs above 3.80, and both Cruz and Sardo graduated with bachelor's degrees in May.
