Mark Wood backed to break new ground and 100mph barrier in Test cricket | England v West Indies 2024
Ben Stokes has backed Mark Wood to become the first person to bowl over 100mph in Test cricket after the Durham pacemen produced an electrifying performance at Trent Bridge last week, hitting a top speed of 97.1mph. Wood has also forced West Indies to change their team for the third Test starting at Edgbaston on Friday after Kevin Sinclair broke a forearm in Nottingham while trying to fend off a bouncer.
Australia's Mitchell Starc currently holds the record for the fastest delivery in Test cricket, with a 99.66mph delivery against New Zealand in 2015. Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar holds the all-format international record with a ball clocked at 100.2mph delivery against England in 2003.
Stokes said Wood has ambitions to reach three figures, but added that I don't know if he really has that much trouble with it.
It seems like he's getting closer [100mph mark]”but I'm happy with what he's doing to be honest,” Stokes said. “To be able to keep up that pace is phenomenal. His average speed is always over 90mph every time he plays a Test match, it's all well and good to bowl over 90 once, but every time he bowls for England he's over 90mph.

Woods' average bowling speed during the entire Trent Bridge Test match was 91.2 mph, with the ball travelling the 22 yards from one end of the wicket to the other in 0.493 seconds. A delivery of 100 mph would give a very marginal gain, saving a further 0.043 seconds.

West Indies will return Gudakesh Motie to the squad in place of Sinclair and have placed Akeem Jordan on standby in case Shamar Joseph fails to recover from a virus. Jordan was brought into the squad earlier this week to replace the injured Jeremiah Louis and although he has never played a Test he has handy knowledge of local conditions having represented Aston Manor in the Warwickshire County League and West Bromwich Dartmouth in the Birmingham & District League this summer.
