Jack Draper and Jannik Sinner were the top players in the singles, who had an advantage over the specialists in the doubles on Tuesday during the Omnium Banque National, presented by Rogers.
As part of the ATP doubles trial, teams of singles players will face specialist doubles teams in the first round. Draper and Sinner headlined the action, beating 16th-seeded Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-0, 6-7(3), 10-8 in front of a packed Court 9.
Despite trailing 4/7 in the Match Tie-break, the British-Italian duo won six of the last seven points to advance, losing just four points behind their first serve, according to Infosys ATP Stats, during the hour and 23 minute match.
Draper and Sinner's next opponents are two Top 30 singles players. They will face Alexander Bublik and Ben Shelton, who continued after a strange injury to their opponents Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten.
Serving at 4-2 in the first-set tiebreak, the Wimbledon champions held their ground at the net, volleying cleanly in response to monster forehands from Shelton. When the American opened his racket head for a backhand, both the left-handed Patten and right-handed Heliovaara braced for an overhead.
Then the Finnish-British duo had a nasty clash, leaving both players visibly shaken. Heliovaara sat on the court for almost a minute while Patten held his head and grimaced. They later retired after suffering concussion symptoms while trailing 7-6(6), 2-1.
It hurt a lot at first, of course, and then it slowly became clear that we had a mild concussion, what the doctor and the physical therapist said, a concussion, Patten said. Too bad, some kind of freak accident. Hopefully it'll be okay. But yeah, I'm just glad it wasn't worse, and that we're okay. We're going to rest for a while and look forward to Cincinnati.
Daniil Medvedev and Roman Safiullin advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over 11th-seeded Ivan Dodig and Jean-Julien Rojer. Medvedev and Safiullin recorded their first team victory in four attempts this season.

Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson defeated home fans Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexis Galarneau 6-0, 6-1. The 12th-seeded players will next face Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, who defeated Canadians Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-3.
