High school football coach suspended after video shows him pushing his hips into a player's head
HOOVER, Alabama.WBRC/Gray News) – Effective immediately, Hoover High School's new football coaches Drew Gilmer and Adam Helms are on administrative leave.
The news was confirmed by WBRC in a press release from Hoover City Schools sent out Tuesday afternoon. No reason was given.
a Video circulating on social media at the same time appears to show a coach running up to a player during a drill at a recent practice, grabbing the player’s face mask and ripping off his helmet. The player is then seen falling.
In a second video now also circulating on social media, a coach appears to thrust his hips into a Bucs player's face while another coach rips off the player's helmet.
The school system has not released a statement about the videos and has not said that the videos are linked to the suspension of the coaches. According to the school's press release, the decision to place the coaches on administrative suspension was made to ensure a thorough and impartial review of recent developments.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities. We take this matter seriously and are working diligently to resolve it quickly and fairly, Hoover Schools Superintendent Kevin Maddox said in the release.
The press release also states that parents, students and staff will be notified of any significant developments as the investigation progresses.
Gilmer was hired as the Hoovers' new football coach in January after a highly successful career at Clay-Chalkville. Adam Helms was hired as defensive coordinator, following Gilmer from Clay-Chalkville.
WBRC has reached out to Gilmer for a statement or interview and will provide updates as new developments arise.
The Hoover program has gained national recognition and was the subject of a 2006 reality television series on MTV. The show, Two-A-Days, aired for only two seasons.
