Crescent Girls keep calm and win C-division girls hockey title
SINGAPORE A change in mindset worked wonders as Crescent Girls School won the C Division girls hockey title for the fourth consecutive time at the National School Games on August 22.
On July 29, their players were a bundle of nerves as they faced arch-rivals CHIJ St Nicholas Girls School (Secondary) in the quarter-final group stage, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
As the teams prepared for the deciding match, Crescent regrouped and adopted a positive attitude to win 3-0 at the Sengkang Hockey Stadium, a repeat of the 2023 final.
Crescent captain Beth Chow, 14, admitted the pressure was too much when they played St Nicholas earlier and the result encouraged them to put in a good performance in the final.
When we realised we were going to play against them (in the quarter-finals), we were scared and our morale dropped, she said.
Teammate Kayle Cheng added: We were stressed in the beginning, but we overcame that for the final and were calm today, which allowed us to play well and at our best.
Crescent's composure was rewarded when they won two penalty corners in the opening five minutes, before scoring through Kylie Lau, who turned in Maira Singh's pass in the seventh minute.
Beth doubled the lead nine minutes into the second quarter, before defender Tiffany Wang secured the win with a penalty corner four minutes from time, prompting wild celebrations.
Coach Nordin Manaff called the victory excellent and praised the strong individual qualities of the players.
The 58-year-old said: Even though we were under pressure and attacked by Santa Claus, we stood firm and played very well and calmly.
The display was in contrast to the previous confrontation between the two teams, with Crescent unsure of what they could do, the coach said.
Although the team managed to score three goals, it was the defence that garnered much praise. 14-year-old Kayle said: It was important to keep our defence tight and make sure they didn't score… so it was a good team effort.
In a sign of Crescents' fighting spirit, defender Tiffany surrendered from her efforts in the third quarter and there were fears she would not be able to continue.
Nordin said: We wanted to stop her, but she said no.
She was the one who held the defense, especially in the last quarter when they attacked.
When she continued to urge her to continue playing, the 14-year-old said: I knew Santa Claus would fight back, so I didn't want to let the team and the supporters down.
