Illinois Football Wants to Crash AP Top 25 Party
The 2024 season has been a hectic one thus far, with two games already played and the Illinois football team gaining national attention.
Going into the new campaign, I thought the Illini would win the first game against Eastern Illinois and then lose the game against Kansas. The Jayhawks are a good team and they will win a lot of games this season. One game they won’t win is the game against Illinois because we managed to get a late lead and never looked back.
Illinois was nowhere near the preseason AP Top 25. We didn't have a single voice. But that's all changed.
In the AP Top 25 poll released Sunday, Illinois didn’t just get a vote. We got 101 votes to be ranked, which was the most votes of any team not in the top 25. So technically, we’re No. 26 in the country.
It’s insane that Illinois is so close to being in the top 25. Back in August, I wrote an article about how early the Illini could get into the top 25. In that article, I wrote that if Illinois beat Kansas, we would get votes to get into the AP Top 25.
That came true.
I also said that we would probably have to win the first four games to get into the AP Top 25. I think that timeline needs to be accelerated. If Illinois beats Central Michigan on Saturday, we should see a small jump into the top 25.
If the Illini can beat the Chippewas and get into the AP Top 25, it would mean we've been ranked at some point in two of the last three seasons.
The last time Illinois was ranked twice within three different seasons was back in 2007 and 2008. We reached number 13 in 2007 and started at number 20 in 2008.
