National Ranking Table Tennis Championships: Sathiyan, Harmeet Desai all set to compete as tournament sees record number of participants
This year's UTT National Ranking Championships season opener kicks off on Wednesday in Kangra, a town renowned for its natural beauty and historical significance.
Kangra is hosting a national ranking event for the first time, organised by the Himachal Pradesh Table Tennis Association.
The tournament attracted a whopping 2,300 participants in 12 categories, including boys, girls, senior men and women, from 44 countries representing 32 states and 12 institutions.
The event is not just about direct competition but also has a deeper meaning as it provides a platform for both young and old players to showcase their talent and prepare for future national and international tournaments.
The championships start with the Youth Under 11 and Youth Under 13 events for boys and girls.
On the other end of the spectrum, experienced players will use this opportunity to strengthen their position on the domestic circuit and prepare for upcoming international competitions.
It is notable that Sharath Kamal, Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula and Archana Kamath, who recently retired from the professional circuit, along with Ayhika Mukherjee (reserve player at the Olympics), skipped the tournament.
However, top paddlers such as G. Sathiyan (a reserve in Paris), Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar, who were part of the Olympic selection in Paris, will participate.
This tournament is an important preparation event for the China Smash later this month and the Asian Championships in Astana next month, and offers players a perfect opportunity to hone their skills.
