Business lessons learned from a former professional cricketer
As Australia’s Olympians and Paralympians celebrate their successful campaign in Paris, former professional cricketer and Head of Applications and Data at Nutrien Ag Solutions, Sriram Kalyan (Sri), reflects on the most valuable business lessons he learned during his career in the sport.
Sri grew up in Chennai, a city in southern India known for its great food, hot weather and the infamous drawn Test match between Australia and India, in which Dean Jones scored 210 in the stifling heat. It is also the home base of the IPL team, Chennai Super Kings.
Indian families are always very generous when they host people and it usually happens without much notice. So my childhood was spent with lots of spontaneous visits from family, neighbours, friends and even friends of friends who would all come to our house and enjoy delicious South Indian dishes, curries and vegetables, all prepared by my mother, says Sri.
As a child, Sri said he had a lot of energy. After spending many afternoons watching his cousins play in the local cricket league and playing with his friends in the streets, his parents enrolled him in a cricket coaching camp during the Christmas holidays.
According to Sri, hockey is the national sport of India, but cricket is more popular.
Cricket became hugely popular in 1983 when India won the Cricket World Cup. Everyone in India lives and breathes cricket. All you need is some kind of bat and ball and the game is on. We played indoors, on the streets, in the park, at school. When I was growing up, the professional cricketers of India were treated like superstars. I was such a big fan of people like Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly, and I also loved the Australian team in the early 2000s.”
Sri started his professional cricket career as a legspinner and quickly developed into a medium-paced bowler and number three batsman.
I played for my state and zone and had the opportunity to play against the visiting New Zealand team which was definitely a highlight of my career. If I remember correctly I scored 46 and got three wickets while taking on the likes of Shane Bond, Tim Southee and bowling to Kane Williamson etc. Needless to say we won that match, I think the high temperatures on that day got the better of our opponents.
Sri has played with and been inspired by some of India's most renowned players including R. Ashwin, Murali Vijay, Ajinkya Rahane and Suryakumar Yadav.
These are some of the lessons Sri says he learnt during his cricketing career that are still relevant in the workplace.
1. Responding to a challenge
In cricket, if we were five wickets down or not playing that well, that was usually the time when I would give my best performance. I think it’s about recognising the situation, staying focused and really rising to the occasion, rather than letting the pressure consume me too much in a negative way. If I can’t get out there, there’s no option to leave the game and throw in the towel, so to speak, we still have to field and see the game out.
2. Leading the team like a professional sports team
In any sports team, you can’t lead or command the side from the front or the back, you have to be embedded in the culture and operations of the team to deliver results. When you lead from within, it’s also easier to recognise how to get the most out of each teammate, have the right person for the right job and work together to achieve a common outcome. It’s about recognising everyone’s individual strengths and contributions and finding opportunities to utilise their skills.
3. Accepting mistakes and learning from mistakes
You can put all the effort and hours of training into preparing yourself for a race, but things don’t always go to plan and there will always be variables on the day. Sometimes it’s important to focus on the process rather than just the outcome, when accepting failure.
Sri now lives in Melbourne with his family and is a member of Nutriens’ IT leadership team. His team is responsible for all applications and software used by the network. Despite not having a background in agriculture, Sri says he feels very connected to the purpose of Nutriens and its customers.

Sri still plays cricket occasionally for his local club and says he also enjoys cheering on his two daughters in their own sporting activities. It seems the love of sports runs in the family, as one of Sri’s daughters was recently awarded a black belt in taekwondo.
While surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing were back on the scene this year, and breaking made its debut at the Paris Olympics, cricket fans will have to wait until the 2028 Los Angeles Games to return to the world’s biggest stage. The Games are likely to be held in a T20 format.
