England suffer defeat in third cricket Test match

Sri Lanka secured their fourth Test victory against England with an unbeaten century from opener Pathum Nissanka, which helped secure an eight-wicket win in the third and final match of the series at the Oval.
Sri Lanka were aiming for 219 and they achieved that with the loss of two wickets. Nissanka was 127 from 124 balls not out and Angelo Mathews was 32 in 61. After a decade, Sri Lanka have just recorded their fourth Test victory in England and their first since a 100-run win at Headingley.
Gus Atkinson caught Kusal Mendis for 39 runs thanks to Shoaib Bashir's superb hit. England were chasing 111 runs and their hopes were dashed by the partnership of Nissanka and Mathews.
England won the three-match series 2-1 after victories at Old Trafford and Lords, but failed to complete their first clean sweep of their home campaign since 2004. England are currently sixth, behind Sri Lanka, in the 2023-25 WTC rankings.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan believes England's performances were disrespectful to Test cricket and Sri Lanka. He also pointed to times in the recent past when England's aggressive approach ultimately cost them series wins.
I thought they disrespected Test cricket and Sri Lanka in the third Test by being too aggressive with both bats and in their fielding position. England have a bit of a habit of getting a bit complacent after a good run. I think the start of the Ashes or earlier this year in Rajkot, and I hope it's a wake-up call for the tougher Tests that loom in 2025, Vaughan was quoted as saying by media reports.
England have won eight of their 16 matches with a points percentage of 42.19%. Sri Lanka are narrowly ahead with 42.86% points. England have had a terrible start which will cost them their chance of the WTC in 2023-25. In the six remaining Tests, even if England win, they will still have a 57.95% lead.
The next series is scheduled to take place in Pakistan in less than a month. The international calendar resumes on Wednesday when an entirely separate English team begins a T20 series against Australia.
