Asian Champions Trophy hockey 2024: India beat Malaysia 8-1
Midfielder Raj Kumar PalIndia's hat-trick helped India beat Malaysia 8-1 in their third group match of the Asian Champions Trophy 2024 Hockey tournament at the Moqi Hockey Training Base in Hulunbuir, People's Republic of China on Wednesday.
Raj Kumar Pal (3, 25, 33) opened the scoring for world number 5 India before adding two more goals in the second and third quarters to complete his hat-trick.
Araijeet Singh Hundal (6, 39) scored twice, while Jugraj Singh (7), captain Harmanpreet Singh (22) and Uttam Singh (40) scored one each. For world number 13 Malaysia, Akhimullah Anuar scored their only goal.
With this victory the Indian Men's Hockey Team has consolidated its lead in the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy with nine points from three matches.
India, the bronze medallists at Paris 2024, were on fire from the start when Raj Kumar Pal scored in the third minute with a superb solo run in the D.
The Indian Hockey Team then scored two more goals in a minute to go 3-0 up in the first quarter. Araijeet Singh scored from a tight angle before Jugraj Singh immediately added another from a penalty corner.
In the second quarter, Harmanpreet Singh, the top scorer at the 2024 Paris Olympics, scored his first goal of the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy with a trademark drag flick. Raj Kumar Pal added another from open play as India led 5-0 at half-time.
After the break, Raj Kumar Pal completed his first international hat-trick three minutes into the third quarter. The Malaysian goalkeeper's ball went straight to Raj Kumar Pal on the edge of the D and the Indian midfielder seized the opportunity.
Malaysia got one goal back through Akhimullah Anuar, but India hit back immediately with two more goals to make it 8-1.
Araijeet Singh turned expertly in the penalty area to tap in the seventh goal. A minute later, Uttam Singh fired the ball past the keeper after saving the first penalty corner.
“We want to give everything in every game, we have to win every game. That's what we discuss in the team meetings,” said Araijeet Singh Hundal, who was named Player of the Match.
“We are here to win. Personally, the last two games were not so good but I am very happy that I scored today. I am getting my confidence back day by day and I will do much better for India in the coming games.”
The Indian hockey team will play their penultimate group match against the People's Republic of Korea, who are ranked 14th in the hockey rankings. Asian Championship Trophy on thursday.
