Kenya sacks Indian cricket coach Ganesh a month after his appointment
Kenya has said goodbye to India's men's national team coach Dodda Ganesh, exactly a month after his appointment.
In a letter sent to Ganesh on Thursday, the Cricket Kenyas (CK) board said the former Indian cricketer had been appointed as Kenya's coach in an irregular manner.
By virtue of a resolution of the Cricket Kenya Executive Committee passed on Wednesday, 28th August 2024, and enshrined underamong other thingsArticles 5.9 and 8.4.3 of the Cricket Kenya Constitution. We wish to inform you that the Board has refused to ratify your appointment as the Head Coach of the National Men's Cricket Team, citing failure to follow the established procedures. This is contained in the letter signed by Cricket Kenya's Director of Women's Cricket, Pearlyne Omami, on behalf of the other CK Board members.
The purported contract entered into between Mr Manoj Patel and yourself on 7th August 2024 stands null and void. Based on the above, Cricket Kenya is not and will not be bound by the purported contract, the letter added.
You are therefore requested to cease any further involvement or association with the Men's National Cricket Team with immediate effect. Any concerns or claims regarding this notice should be channeled to Mr. Manoj Patel and all other persons who have irregularly and unprocedurally involved you in this regard.
Ganesh, 51, was unveiled as the coach of the Kenya national cricket team on August 13, 2024, at the Sikh Union Club in Nairobi. He signed a one-year contract, which was open to renewal. CK Chief Executive Officer Ronald Bukusi was among the federation officials present at the unveiling ceremony.
In his address, Ganesh said his main mission was to lead the team back to the core of the International Cricket Council (ICC) family.
“My first vision is to qualify for the World Cup,” Ganesh, who has 25 years of experience as a coach, said during his unveiling.
He played four Test matches for India.
Ganesh steps down from his role just two weeks before Kenya hosts the first round of the 2024-26 ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League A tournament, scheduled for September 25 to October 5, 2024 in Nairobi.
Kenya, Denmark, Kuwait, Papua New Guinea, Jersey and Qatar are participating in the competition.
Ganesh's departure means that former Kenya internationals Lameck Onyango and Joseph Angara will resume their previous roles as Kenya national coach and assistant coach respectively on an interim basis.
