On the eve of the Test, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir was asked if he had any plans to develop a seam-bowling all-rounder. In true characteristic style, he would make a clear statement. If we don’t have it, we don’t have it. We still have quality all-rounders, we need to manage Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar, he would say. And on his first day in the Test team’s office, it was India’s two priceless all-rounders R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who pulled them out of a hole at 144/6 and ended Day 1 on 339 for six.

Midway through the opening day of the Test, after Bangladesh won the toss, they opted to bowl, with the total looking out of India's reach. With the MA Chidambaram Stadium surface offering movement and good bounce, Bangladesh's seamers made the most of it, while India's batting line-up also made their task easy with some loose hitting.

But in domestic situations, particularly in the last decade, it is the contribution of the lower-order batsmen involving the spin-bowling all-rounders that has made them invincible. And on Thursday it was two familiar faces, localite Ashwin and Chennai Super Kings Jadeja, who once again came to India’s rescue, as they have done repeatedly in the past.

But the unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 195 was by far their most counter-attacking, dominant partnership of all. The two refer to each other on their Instagram accounts as Indran, Chandran, inspired by the dual roles played by Superstar Rajnikanth in the film Thillu, Mullu (Golmaal remake). In many ways, they are the inseparable twins in this Indian Test dominance. And it was Bangladesh’s turn to experience it first-hand.

In the last few years, Jadeja has overtaken Ashwin, the batsman. When it comes to choosing one of the two in overseas conditions, it is Jadeja that India leans towards. At home, there are no such compulsions. The two can flourish together with both the ball and the bat, but it was an innings where Ashwin showed that he is definitely not behind Jadeja with the bat.

When Ashwin came in for the 43rd over in the post-lunch session with his family and friends from Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in attendance, it was a defining moment for India. They had opted to play just two spinners, one wicket more, and India were on their tail. On a pitch where India’s batsmen looked a little hesitant, Ashwin had read the pitch well. From the second delivery he faced, he punched a boundary with a back-foot punch through covers.

It’s an old-school Chennai surface with bounce and carry. If there’s width, you can give it a tonk. I love playing when there’s bounce and carry, I enjoyed it today, Ashwin would say later. And he enjoyed it.

Over the past year or so, he’s put extra effort into the bat, even flying to Seattle to study baseball mechanics in bat and ball. And speaking on his YouTube channel prior to the test, he seemed to have the pitch down pat.

And when he got his first boundary, Ashwin countered his way out. When Bangladesh offered width in attack, taking a cue from Rishabh Pant, he went hard with his horizontal bat shots on the off-side. And when their pacers dished out short-ball and bouncers, he happily used the pull-shot he had picked up from gully cricket to good effect. On a pitch where he had to rely on back-foot strokes, he trusted the bounce and hit boundaries on both sides of the square. Seven of his 10 boundaries came between covers and third-man. His pull got him three boundaries on the leg-side and two sixes off spinners ended in the mid-wicket region. Only three singles came in the V, as the fielders were pushed back when the spinners operated. It also helped Ashwin that he had a good run in the TNPL with the bat, including three consecutive fifties in the play-offs and final.

Jadeja was really helpful, there was a point where I was sweating and getting tired but Jaddu helped me through that phase. He is solid and one of our best batters. He told me that we don't have to convert twos into threes which was helpful for me, he told the broadcasters.

When Ashwin went on the attack in the early stages of the stand, Jadeja was prepared enough to drop anchor. It was only in the final session that Jadeja upped his game, especially against the spinners. Once he found his rhythm, Jadeja was just as fierce, hitting as many boundaries and sixes as Ashwin. Limited in reach but temperamentally more solid and patient, he waited for the Bangladesh attack to feed his arc and when they did, he took full advantage.

Before the Test, Ashwin had said he wanted to create memories at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. And after making all his four Tests memorable on his home ground, he created more memories on Day 1 of what could possibly be his final Test at Chepauk with his Chandran by his side.
