Former UNC hockey player Romea Riccardo joins coaching staff –
She'll tell you she's better than anyone, Jeff Riccardo said. I mean, that's just her.
And over the years she has worked to prove this sentiment. She was recruited by then UNC head coach Karen Shelton in high school, a dream comes out for the hockey-loving family of ten.
Five years later, Romea Riccardo is now one of the most decorated players in UNC field hockey history, joining Matson. So it just felt right to take on the new role of assistant coach for Matson’s second year at the helm of the program at North Carolina.
Follow her graduation from UNC last fall, they coached one-on-one, clubs, clinics and camps. When she saw the position open with the Tar Heels, she knew she had to apply.
My teammates from last year were like: You're obsessed, Riccardo said. You want it so badly.
During the interview processRiccardo stressed that she didn't want the position to be given to her because she played for the team. Although a national search was conducted, Matson always knew Riccardo would be great in the role.
Although there were several candidates, it was quickly clear during Riccardo's job interview that she would get the job.
When the performance was over, Matson was over the MoonAs good friends and former co-captains, the young duo knows each other's game. Having played together for much of their lives in Pennsylvania, they knew when to be serious and shared the same competitiveness.
We've always been used to each other, Matson said. When it's time to hang out and go to a restaurant together and have a friend-to-friend conversation and be normal 24-year-olds. But on the field, it's business. We want to win.
Riccardo's sister Ciana Riccardoa fifth-year back on the team, said the transition to coaching life simple for everyone. She is often teases that she followed her sister onto the team after she opened the door and made it possible.
Not much has changed, just because she was always such a leader on the pitch and always had that voice and the respect from the players, Ciana Riccardo said.
That voice isn't one that Romea developed herself, but she said that when she coaches, she often reminds of her father. His tone, delivery, encouragement and attitude are all things she admires about his coaching style and tries to embody on the field.
