Chicago-born Israeli teen overcomes disability to become table tennis champion
Chicago-born Israeli athlete who exceeded expectations during preparation for the Paralympic Games
A Chicago-born teenager has defied the odds and will compete in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
CHICAGO – Sixteen-year-old Yehonatan Levi, a Chicago-born Israeli teenager who overcame severe disabilities, has returned to his hometown as a table tennis champion with big dreams.
Levi, together with other Paralympic athletes, is raising money for a facility in Israel that helps people with disabilities participate in sports.
Levi's story is remarkable. Born in Chicago, his skull was crushed by forceps during childbirth, leaving him partially paralyzed on the left side of his body. Despite his injuries, Levi refused to give up.
“Because of the injury, I'm injured on the left side of my body,” Levi said. “You can see the eye, the hand, the legs. But I don't give up. I work hard all the time.”
At the age of six, Levi moved with his family to Israel, where he discovered table tennis and became involved with the Israel Parasport Center, an organization in Northfield that provides sports opportunities to people with disabilities in Israel. The center supports athletes from all backgrounds, including those affected by war.
This week, Levi and fellow 10-year-old athlete Omer Gadot are holding table tennis exhibitions in Chicago to raise money for the center. Jennifer Flink, head of the Israel Parasport Center, emphasized the center's inclusiveness.
“All you need to come to the center is a physical disability,” Flink said. “We check politics at the door and we really want to be the best person you can be.”
Levi has become so good at table tennis that he is aiming for the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.
“When you do something you love and enjoy, it feels good. I am really working hard to represent my country and SportsCenter at the 2028 Paralympics in Los Angeles,” Levi said.
Also at Wednesday's event was attorney Steve Levin, who won the medical malpractice case involving Levi's birth injuries. When Levin saw Yehonatan now, he expressed surprise.
“When you look at what he was like then and you compare it to what he is like now, it's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in my professional career,” Levin said. “And gratifying and heartwarming.”
Levi and the athletes from the Israel Parasport Center will soon travel to New York to continue their fundraising efforts, as the center faces increasing demand from victims of conflicts in the Middle East.
