Hockey falls to Worcester State in overtime, 3-2
WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior defender Maggie Nagelor (Dartmouth, Massachusetts) scored the winning goal in overtime to lift the Worcester State University field hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Friday evening in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) affair at Coughlin Field.
The Lancers, who earned their first win, improve to 1-6 on the season and 1-1 in the MASCAC, while the Bears fall to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Worcester has won each of the two teams' last six meetings and is 22-24 against the Bears since 1983.
Nailor's winning goal, her first of the season, came 6:47 into extra time when she tipped home a shot from the junior midfielder Charlotte MacGregor (Bellingham, Massachusetts) from a penalty corner.
Junior midfielder Allison Keenan (Marlborough, Mass.) opened the scoring for the Lancers with 8:15 left in the first quarter, converting an assist from senior forward Natalya Morin (Barre, Mass.). Morin blocked the rebound of her own shot and delivered a pass to the front of the cage to Keenan, who delivered a shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Bears tied the score at 1-1 with just 58 seconds left until halftime. From a penalty corner, second midfielder Abbie Zuber (Westport, Mass.) collected a return pass from freshman forward Taylor Carter (East Walpole, Massachusetts) and placed a powerful hook shot into the far post. The goal was Zuber's fourth of the 2024 campaign.
Junior forward Lexi James (Ipswich, Mass.) gave the visitors a 2-1 lead 2:25 into the third quarter. After a battle in front of the net, James tucked a shot over the goal line for her third marker of the season.
Morin scored the tying goal 76 seconds into the fourth quarter on an assist from the junior midfield Kaelin Coleman (Attleboro, Mass.). For Morin it was her third team leader of the year.
The Lancers had a 22-7 shooting advantage during the match, as well as an 11-5 edge in penalty corners.
Junior goalkeeper Brianna Gagnon (Tewksbury, Mass.) made 10 saves in the setback for the Bears. Senior netminder Madison Ferrari (Somerset, Mass.) turned away four shots for the hosts.
The MASCAC schedule continues next week for both teams. The Bears entertain Framingham State University on Tuesday night at 7, while the Lancers also travel to Fitchburg State University on Tuesday to take on the Falcons at 4.
