More than 1,000 people have been punished for chaotic behavior by fan circles in China
BEIJING – According to the Chinese Ministry of Public Security, more than 800 people have been criminally punished and more than 200 people have faced administrative penalties this year due to chaotic behavior by 'fan circles'.
“Fan circles,” or “Fanquan” in Chinese, refer to organized online communities that focus on specific celebrities. Originally centered around the entertainment industry, these groups are now common in the sports world as well. Such fan groups often engage in organized activities such as purchasing products endorsed by their idols and voting for idol-related content online.
In recent years, some fan circles have been criticized for overzealous behavior, sometimes leading to online conflict or even cyberbullying, violating celebrities' privacy and encouraging excessive consumption.
Since this year, Chinese police have investigated more than 700 fan circle-related cases involving illegal and criminal acts, such as fake involvement of fan groups on social networks, stalking, selling personal information and cyberbullying, said Shi You, an official with the ministry. Friday at a news conference.
During the Paris Olympics, police had taken strong measures to investigate several cases of cyberbullying linked to fan communities, which received widespread attention and support from the public, Shi said.
In August, the ministry published four typical cases of cyberbullying and defamation against Chinese Olympians. Both the Chinese Table Tennis Association and the Chinese Gymnastics Association expressed support for the crackdown and condemned the fan circle's chaotic behavior that had an “extremely negative impact” on athletes, coaches and other staff members.
Shi said the ministry will continue to crack down on illegal fan circle activities, and reminded fans to engage in rational and civil fandom practices.
