Red Wings vs. Penguins postponed
The Ilitch family, owners of the Detroit Red Wingsalso owns the playoff-bound Detroit Tigers. And they're taking a page from MLB spring training and bringing it into the NHL preseason.
Saturday's NHL preseason game at Little Caesars Arena between the Red Wings and Pittsburgh Penguins was postponed. Travel difficulties encountered by the Penguins in their attempts to reach Detroit were the cause of the postponement.
Originally, in hopes that the Penguins could make it to the Motor City, the game's start time was pushed back to 8:30 p.m. The puck was originally scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.

The match has now been moved to Monday, with a start time at 7 p.m. However, the Red Wings will also play in Buffalo that evening against the Sabers in the NHL preseason. So they play with a split squad. Part of the team remains in Detroit to play the Penguins. Another group heads to Buffalo to take on the Sabres.

Split squad games have been common in baseball spring training for decades. Now they have become part of the NHL preseason landscape.
