Holger Rune returns from Brink and reaches the semi-finals of the Japan Open
Denmark's Holger Rune fought back from a match point deficit to reach the semi-finals of the Japan Open after beating Kei Nishikori 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 on Sunday. Rune, the number six seed, came back from the brink to win four straight matches and end the Japanese veteran's challenge in front of a lively Tokyo crowd. “It was about getting the first serve, and if I could save that match point, I knew I could apply pressure,” said Rune, who will play defending champion Ben Shelton or France's Arthur Fils in the semifinals. “The momentum shifted a little bit. I lifted myself up, I was more positive.” Plagued by injuries, the 34-year-old Nishikori returned to Grand Slam competition at the French Open in May after an absence of almost three years.
He was in inspired form in Tokyo this week, taking early control of the match against Rune.
“It was a great week for me; three great matches with tough opponents,” said Nishikori, who reached the US Open final a decade ago and was once world number four.
“I would say this was the best week so far. I played very solidly, I raised my level.”
Rune needed a medical timeout in the third set and he said that “at one point I thought this wouldn't be the case”.
“But I just kept believing and trusting my fighting spirit, that was really all I could do and I managed to get through it,” he said.
“Definitely one for the books.”
Frenchman Ugo Humbert also advanced to the semi-finals after his British opponent Jack Draper retired early in the second set.
Earlier this month, 22-year-old Draper became the first British man to reach the semi-finals of the US Open since Andy Murray won the title 12 years ago.
He wanted to build on his success in Tokyo but needed medical treatment to his upper body late in a first set that Humbert won 7-5.
The Frenchman was leading 2-1 in the second when Draper indicated he could not continue.
“I feel sorry for him because he wasn't 100 percent, but at least we played a great first set with a great level and intensity,” Humbert said.
“I'm just happy to be in the semi-finals.”
Draper had not dropped serve in two matches en route to the quarter-finals in Tokyo, but Humbert broke him three times in a hard-fought first set.
Humbert, who is ranked 19th in the world and has won two titles on the ATP tour this year, will face Czech Tomas Machac in the semi-finals.
Machac defeated American qualifier Alex Michelsen 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 in the first quarter-final of the day.
“Everyone is playing so well, the ranking doesn't matter,” Humbert said.
“Everyone is playing really well, anyone can beat anyone. I just try to take my chance, play my game and see what happens.”
