Nishikori's impressive Japan Open run was stopped by Rune

Host country favorite Kei Nishikori's remarkable performance at the Japan Open tennis tournament was halted in the quarter-finals on Sunday by Danish youngster Holger Rune.

Rune, ranked 14th in the world, rallied from 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 after fighting a match point to win the last four matches at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo.

The 200th-ranked Nishikori was unable to wrap things up on match point as he led five games to three in the final set.

Rune broke Nishikori twice late in the final set, including the final game.

“It was a great match,” Nishikori said. “He raised his level and started playing well in the second and third sets. He scored all the important points, especially in the third set. He really deserved this win today.”

“When I took the first set after he made a lot of unnecessary mistakes, I thought he wouldn't stay like this. There are things I still need to work on, but overall I played three good matches this week.”

It was the first meeting between the 34-year-old veteran and the 21-year-old Dane, both former number 4 in the world.

Nishikori hit a backhand into the net on Rune's first match point. Rune finished with 39 winners to Nishikori's 17.

“I found a way,” Rune said. “Kei played super, super well. He came back from his injury and played so well, served so accurately and brought me across the court. I am happy with my fighting spirit.”

Tomas Machac from the Czech Republic and Frenchman Ugo Humbert advanced to Monday's semi-finals together with Rune.

Earlier Sunday, Tokito Oda, the world's No. 1 wheelchair tennis player, won his second consecutive Japan Open title.

The 18-year-old Paralympic gold medalist defeated bronze medalist Gustavo Fernandez of Argentina 6-3, 6-4.

Oda won all three of his matches in straight sets this week.

“I saw the scenery I wanted to see,” Oda said of the large crowd on hand for the final. “I enjoyed it in Paris, but I proved that I can attract so many fans in Japan. I'm happy to play in this atmosphere.”
