Nebraska football star puts referees on edge after win over Purdue
For what seems like the fifth time in a row this season, the Nebraska football team not only had to try to beat the team on the other side of the field, but also had to beat the referees. Whether it's simply a biased perception or reality, the job public servants do only seems to be getting worse.
Things got so bad for the Huskers on Saturday that despite a 28-10 victory, Matt Rhule was so fed up with blown calls that he himself was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for 15 yards after threw his headphones to the ground.
As it turns out, even being flagged for that penalty was probably the wrong call, as he didn't yell at a referee who had awarded another wrong penalty. He was not on the field either, but, as he put it, in the white of the sideline. Rhule being flagged wasn't even the most ridiculous call against the Nebraska football team. That honor goes to tight end Thomas Fidone.
Early in the game, the Huskers should have broken the game open, 7-0, thanks to a nice dump-off pass to Rahmir Johnson on which he broke free and went on a long touchdown run. However, the TD was called back because the officials claimed Fidone had committed offensive pass interference when he contacted a defender.
Video of the incident shows Fidone jumping out of the defender's way, not making contact and therefore not interfering. However, he still deserved the flag and after the match he made his opinion known.
They didn't say anything to me. Fidone told 10/11 News. Yes, they didn't say anything to me. I thought it was a ridiculous call. I didn't even touch the man. So I literally jumped out of his, I got out of the way so no flag was called at me. Yes, I was quite angry about that, but they didn't say anything to me. It was ridiculous though.
Fidone isn't wrong, and far too many good football games in Nebraska have been ruined by bad referees. It must change immediately.
