Heartache as Lancers fall in shootout to Ohio
FARMVILLE, Va. An even hockey game went back and forth through regulation, overtime and then double overtime between Longwood and Ohio on Sunday afternoon.
Ultimately, the two sides were deadlocked at 1-1, but Ohio (4-5, 1-1 MAC) won a shootout 3-2 to narrowly defeat the Lancers (3-5, 1-2 MAC).

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Longwood came out and dominated the opening quarter, controlling possession and creating chances. The Lancers didn't allow a shot while scoring five of their own.
In the fourth minute, Longwood earned back-to-back corners. On the second, Zoe Tierney shoots a shot towards the cage Jane Ramsay deflected towards the goalkeeper. Ramsay gave the rebound a 1-0 lead.
Ohio found its footing and eventually pushed its way into multiple corners in the third quarter. Noa Desmaretz deflected a shot from Meela Kopp to level the score at one.
From then on, the game became choppy, with a total of two shots in the fourth quarter.
The field opened up slightly in extra time, but again the back lines made it difficult for both teams. Ohio had six shots in overtime while Longwood had three, with both teams narrowly missing good opportunities to score.
It's fitting that in a match like this it came down to the last shooter of five before the shootout. Caitlin Carraway And Madison Wiley had their tries for Longwood, and Emily Risser and Sophie Van Der Wal both scored home tries for Ohio. Anouk Plaehn then barely scored the decisive goal, but just missed a diving attempt by Longwood's Sophie Mooldijk who deflected the ball but couldn't push it away.

Longwood returns to the field next weekend with a trip to Ball State on Friday, October 4. The first goal is scheduled for 12 noon.
