Women's tennis performs solidly at ITA-All American Championships
CARY, N.C. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis successfully competed at the ITA All-American Championships. The Quakers sent six athletes to the championships, the only Ivy League team to have that many, and sent three players to the main singles and doubles draws.
Eileen Wang, Gabriella Smith, Ugly MayaAnd Lara Stojanovsky took part in the pre-qualification rounds. Wang went 1-1 in singles, while Smith and Urata went 0-2. As a doubles pair, Urata and Stanjovski went 0-1.
Sabine Rutlauka won both her matches in the singles qualifying round, securing her ticket to the main draw, where she finished 2–2. The main draw saw Rutlauka face a number of high-ranked ITA matches, with her victories over #30 Jessica Alsola coming in three sets and #46 Petra Sedlackova in straight sets.
Esha Velagawas also in the main draw and finished 2-2. The sophomore also took down some big names in the ITA rankings, her wins coming in straight sets over #17 Kimmi Hince (UCLA) and Elana Yu (Duke). Velaga's final match in the main draw was against the tournament's top seed and winner of last year's ITA All-American Championships, Texas A&M's Mary Stoiana, and she took the Agget three sets before falling (6-2, 4- 6, 6-3).
Velaga and Wang scored 0-2 in doubles in the main draw. In a three-set match, the duo took on #35 Amelia Honer and Anna-Marie Weisheim
Penn returns to action this weekend as they host the Cissie Leary Invitationala at the Hamlin/Hect Tennis Centers.
