Juniors battle for glory in table tennis showdown
Rising table tennis stars, including a Paris 2024 Olympian, will return this weekend when they go head-to-head at the World Table Tennis Youth Contender Darwin.
A key figure on the international calendar, the contender will bring together some of the best young players from around the world. The competition runs from Thursday, October 3 to Sunday, October 6, 2024 and promises exciting matches and a glimpse of future talent in the sport.
Players will represent Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Denmark and New Zealand to compete for world ranking points in age group in U11; U13; U15; U17 and U19 years girls and boys singles and mixed doubles.
The Australian team includes Olympian Nicholas Lum, currently with a world ranking of 34. He is currently ranked second in the Australian men's rankings and is the Oceania men's singles champion. He last played in this event in 2019. Other Australian players include Connie Psyhogios, Australia's No. 1 in the U21, U19 and U17 girls' singles; Sanaya Buddhadasa was ranked 2nd in the AUS in the U19 girls rankings and 3rd in the U21 women's rankings; Alice Qinle ranked first in Australia in the U15 and U13 girls' singles; and Lawrence Fan ranked first in Australia in the U13 boys' singles.
Lawrence, Sanaya and Connie have played in this event in recent years, with Lawrence winning gold and Connie winning silver. Darwin's own Sebastian Lai, Runshu Li and Antara Pancha will take part in the competition.
The match, held at the Marrara Indoor Stadium, is free to spectators and provides a great opportunity to see high-level sport in Darwin.
The World Table Tennis Youth Contender Darwin is supported by the Northern Territory Government through the Northern Territory Major Events Company Event Funding Program.
