Central Tennis dominated the 2024 state tournament, capturing the team titles.
Individual titles included:
– Girl's 1 Singles: Hailey Mathis-Breitkopf: She won in straight sets to cap an undefeated season.
– Girl's 2 Singles: Cailyn Smedley: Gave up one game in a straight set win.
– Girl's 2 Doubles: Quincy Dereemer/Rachel Gertsch: took the title in a three-set thriller
“I've been working hard. I've played all four years of high school, all four years on varsity, and I've played all season, so I play in the winter and summer, so it's definitely been the goal,” says Dereemer. said.
– Boy's 3 Doubles: Zeman Collins and Andrew Lance: An exciting three-set match.
“It felt great. These guys that we've been working with, like a lot of these seniors have been here for four years, just like last year, they came up short, one point away from the state title. We were finally able to do it this year and it just feels really good to be able to put that 2024 on the banner in front of the tennis courts,” said Lance.
The team titles show the strength of the team from top to bottom, especially when you look at the margins.
The girls team scored a total of 61 points, 25 more than second place. The boys scored 41 points, 12 points higher than second place.
“Our attitude is different than a lot of other teams. We have a very competitive mentality and tennis is probably 80% mental and we just have a very strong mental game. It just helps us win games and be a successful program” , Lance said. .
This was the girls' second straight team title and the boys' first outright title since 2009. They tied for it in 2018.
Second-year Head Coach Garrett Seamans is on the cusp of a dynasty.
“He has pushed us to limits that I didn't even know we could reach as a team, but also as players. He has confidence in us and he makes us do things that many other tennis coaches don't do, like conditioning. Because tennis isn't is as much of a conditioning sport as football or basketball, and that's why he wants to make us athletes and not just tennis players. I really respect him for that.
