Denver was voted first in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Preseason Poll
DENVER The University of Denver hockey team was picked first in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live Preseason Poll for the 2024-2025 season, which was released Monday.
The Pioneers received 27 of 34 first-place votes for a total of 670 points. Boston College was selected second and had four first places and 644 points.
Boston University was third (587 points), Michigan State was fourth (551 points) and Minnesota was fifth (515 points) at the top of the poll. No. 9 Cornell received the other three first-place votes in the rankings.
Denver is coming off its NCAA-record 10th national championship after beating Boston College 2-0 in the title game on April 13. The Pioneers also defeated BU in the Frozen Four and posted 2-1 wins against Cornell and current No. 14 Massachusetts in the NCAA Regionals.
DU finished 2023-2024 with an overall record of 32-9-3, marking its third consecutive 30-win campaign, a first in program history, and the Pios extended their “Tenzer” Streak (at least 20 wins) to 22 consecutive full seasons dating back to 2001-02. The Pioneers finished second in the NCHC regular season with a league mark of 15-7-2, but went on to capture their third NCHC Frozen Faceoff trophy as conference tournament champions.
The National Collegiate Hockey Conference led all leagues on the USCHO.com list by placing seven of the nine teams in the top 20. DU was added to the list by North Dakota at No. 6, Colorado College at No. 12, Western Michigan at No. 15, St. Cloud State at No. 16, Omaha at No. 17 and Minnesota Duluth at No. 18. Arizona State also received votes in the poll, while future NCHC member St. Thomas came in first at No. 20 time it program has ever been ranked.
Denver was also picked first in the USCHO.com Preseason Poll released last Monday and was voted among the conference favorites in the NCHC Preseason Media Poll.
The Pioneers open their 2024-25 season with a two-game series at Alaska Anchorage on Oct. 5-6. It will be the first meeting since the former WCHA foes met in a neutral-site match in Fairbanks on October 19, 2013 and the first match in Anchorage since a series of conferences on January 27-28, 2012.
