What Alabama football players thought of Kalen DeBoers' outburst in Georgia
It was a pretty obvious missed call. Just before halftime on Saturday, right in front of Alabama football head coach Kalen DeBoer, Georgia's Daniel Harris blanked Crimson Tide receiver Germie Bernard, preventing him from making a third-down catch.
DeBoer looked around for the flag. When it became clear that the referees didn't see it his way, he left.
“I just fought for my team,” DeBoer said Monday. I know they were fighting and doing everything they could. I liked the way we were playing up to that point. I saw it in a certain way and wanted to make it known.
He waved his arms, jumped up and down, pointed to the video board and let the officials call it the perceived foul.
The first-year head coach from Alabama usually doesn't do that. He is known for his calm, even temperament, which is a stark departure from Nick Saban's overwhelming, bombastic personality.
Crimson Tide safety Keon Sabb said he enjoyed watching the outburst and appreciated DeBoer standing up for the team. He said it was the most heated he has ever seen the coach.
He got a little excited during practice, but that's the most I've seen him for sure, Sabb said. Jumping around and almost throwing stuff. That was nice to see, it was good.
UA center Parker Brailsford agreed.
It's certainly not the first time, but it doesn't happen often, said Brailsford, who followed DeBoer from Washington. He's more of a quiet guy. If we look at him and he is calm, that will make us calm. So that's definitely what I think he's going for.
Unlike Saban, who occasionally let some intense profanity fly across terrestrial airwaves, DeBoer doesn't swear much. Based on evidence from open practice periods, his staff, especially defensive coordinator Kane Wommack, more than makes up for his lack of swearing.
Even in the middle of his rant on Saturday, DeBoer appeared to be keeping the language in check. Brailsford jokingly said he had no comment when asked if he had ever heard his coach curse before.
Sabb admitted that DeBoer lets one fly every now and then.
No big swear words, he said. One may have dropped out, but I don't want to sell the coach.
Ultimately, the pass interference that made DeBoer so hot had no impact on the outcome. Alabama won a thriller and is on its way to Vanderbilt.
The Crimson Tide and Commodores are scheduled to kick off at 3:15 PM CT on Saturday in Nashville. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
