Southern Valley High School cancels the remainder of the 2024 football season
OXFORD, Neb. (KSNB) – Southern Valley Schools announced Tuesday that they have canceled the remainder of their 2024 high school football season effective immediately due to a lack of available players. This includes both the varsity and junior varsity teams.
The district said the decision was not made lightly, but they could not in good conscience put the few players they had left in an awkward position.
For us, numbers-wise, we didn't have enough kids available to continue bringing a safe product to market, said Josh Lanik, Southern Valley Activities Director. We had a total of 10 or 11 healthy bodies in grades 9-12.
We as a board have spoken with the coaches and made the decision this morning to cancel the remainder of our season. From a safety perspective, we had to make that decision. Some of our varsity kids aren't quite varsity ready yet and we would be doing them a disservice. With a clear conscience we couldn't let those kids running around there on a Friday night.
The football team was 0-5 overall and 6th in Class D1 District 9. They were scheduled to play at Hi-Line on Friday at 7 p.m.
Their other scheduled games included hosting North Platte St. Patricks on October 11 and Dundy County Stratton on October 18.
