Ex-cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin summoned by ED in money laundering case | India News
The Enforcement Directorate on Thursday summoned cricketer and politician Mohammed Azharuddin in connection with a money laundering case during his tenure as president of the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA). The Congress leader has sought time to appear before the organisation, sources said.
As part of a Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA) case, the ED is probing alleged financial irregularities in the HCA, where it conducted searches in November last year.
The PMLA case follows three First Information Reports (FIRs) and charge sheets filed by the Telangana anti-corruption bureau (ACB). The ACB has alleged that there has been criminal misappropriation of funds to the tune of Rs 20 crore. PTI.
Azharuddin was appointed HCA president in 2019 but his tenure, which ended with the appointment of Justice (Retd) L Nageswara Rao in 2023, was affected by infighting within the HCA Apex Council and several court cases.
While running for a second term as HCA president, Azharuddin had vowed to root out deep-rooted corruption in the governing body.
