Tennis heads to Spartanburg for the Big Southern Shootout
CullowheeNC — Catamount women's tennis will represent the Southern Conference this weekend at the Wofford-hosted Big Southern Shootout, where three traditional SoCon member institutions will face off against three Big South foes for conference bragging rights.
WCU will be joined by the tournament host Terriers, as well as Chattanooga representing the SoCon. The SoCon trifecta faces the Big South Conference trio of Gardner-Webb, Longwood and Radford. Although he is a member of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), Campbell will also take the court in Spartanburg this weekend.
The Catamounts will be in action on all three days of the tournament, facing Gardner-Webb in doubles on Friday before taking on the Radford Highlanders in singles on the opening day. WCU next splits with a pair of Catamounts facing Longwood on Saturday, while most of the team sees Radford play doubles. The team will also remain split in singles on the day, with one Catamount facing off against a Highlander in a head-to-head singles battle, while most of the team will see Longwood close out the day's play.
Catamount's lineup will be busy all Sunday with two doubles matches against Longwood as the opening match. WCU then concludes the tournament by taking on the Runnin' Bulldogs in five singles matches on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
Last time in the WCU Fall Invitation, four active Cat amounts offered functions as Jade's quartet Green, Andrea Redondo, Madison SchwarzAnd Dasha Osadova compiled a 7-9 record against opponents from Bellarmine, Emory and Gardner-Webb in the home tournament. The Purple and Gold split with the Runnin' Bulldogs 3-3, winning the doubles matches, while Schwarz picked up the lone win in singles.
The fall portion of the WCU schedule concludes with the ITA Division I regionals held in Raleigh, NC on October 17-21.
The Western Carolina women's tennis championship spring season begins in February with the full schedule to be announced later this fall.
