West Lafayette, Central Catholic win sectional titles
LAFAYETTE West Lafayette senior Jasper Xiang's parry and reaction followed his friend, Harrison freshman Zan Young, during the IHSAA boys tennis sectional final on Thursday.
Xiang and Young have played as opponents and hitting partners since Young moved to West Lafayette two years ago after his father, Geoff, became the Purdue men's tennis coach.
A large crowd gathered around Young and Xiang, with all eyes on the two players who would determine this year's section winner.
“Zan is a really good player and we have been practicing all year long since he moved here,” Xiang said. “He's a really nice guy and he pushed me really hard today.”
Xiang focused on hitting clean, consistent forehands and Young tried to use his speed to shorten the court and force mistakes.
But on this day, Xiang was unwavering. He kept his forehands and rallies simple and never strayed too far from center court. He defeated Young 6-2, 6-2, as West Lafayette advanced with a 3-2 team victory.
“I think it comes from playing a lot of matches and tournaments,” Xiang said. “I had quite a few meltdowns and I lost because I didn't feel like it. So I knew if I didn't keep my composure I would destroy myself and lose the match.”
West Lafayette secured its second straight sectional championship, making it 31 for the Red Devils since 1988.
West Lafayette doubles teams Gavin Ruan and Yoonsung Kee won 6-1, 6-3, and Jonathan Hong and Anthony Son won 6-4, 6-1.

Harrison won the other two singles matches, thanks to Emerson Mohr and Henry Graham.
Ruan and Kee have had good chemistry on and off the field for ten years. The two became good friends at Jump Start Preschool and started playing tennis at the age of eight.
“We've had a lot of classes together since seventh grade, so we've been able to build a really strong bond with each other,” Ruan said. “And that translates very well on the tennis court, because our playing styles complement each other very well. Yoonsung can hit a lot of powerful shots, especially on the serve, and he has a very good volley. And I'm solid from the baseline, so I can set it up very well, especially when we play doubles.”
The win for West Lafayette avenged a loss when the teams faced off on August 22. That day, Xiang and Young played a three-hour match that Young won after Xiang battled cramps.
This time the result was different on a quiet, breezy Thursday afternoon as Xiang faced Young, who has been dealing with a lingering foot injury all fall.
“Even though the score didn't really seem like a good match, every score went to a deuce,” Xiang said. “And I really had to fight and push myself to win this match.”
Central Catholic records first-ever boys tennis sectional
Central Catholic needed some tinkering in the final two weeks before sectionals started after an injury sidelined doubles player Colton Minnick for the remainder of the season.
And somehow the Knights, with two faces in different places, came together at the right time.
Junior Alex Schummer and senior Trevor Powers rolled as doubles partners to win 6-0, 6-2, as the Knights won their first-ever boys tennis sectional 3-2 over McCutcheon.
Evan McLaughlin (6-1, 6-0) and Jonah Gerkey (6-1, 6-3) each won the singles matches.
“Surprisingly, we've never actually won a sectional title and every year we put our goals on a piece of paper,” Powers said. “It happened this year, I love these guys that I really bonded with this year.
Powers and Schummer discussed the school's legacy of increasing athletic success, with state titles in baseball, football, girls volleyball, boys and girls basketball and girls soccer.
“It means a lot to me to continue that tradition of section titles,” Schummer said. “Continuing that legacy of winning and contributing to the school.
