Chinese rowers Lin/Kuai claim the first China Smash mixed doubles title-Xinhua

Lin Shidong and Kuai Man defeated teammates Lin Gaoyuan and Wang Yidi to win the mixed doubles title at WTT China Smash. Swedish legend Jorgen Persson ended his final stint as the country's head coach when Truls Moregard withdrew from the men's singles quarter-finals.

BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) — Second-seeded pair Lin Shidong and Kuai Man secured an 11-5, 3-11, 11-5, 11-5 victory over Lin Gaoyuan and Wang Yidi in an all-Chinese mixed doubles final of the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash on Friday.

The mixed doubles trophy was the first offered at the China Smash, an 11-day tournament that concludes on Sunday.

As of Friday, the doubles matches were still a best-of-five series, while the winners in the singles quarterfinals were decided in the best-of-seven.

“We had a strong start. Despite losing in the second set, we kept the momentum going for the rest of the match to seal the victory,” said 19-year-old Lin Shidong. “There were no easy matches, so we tried to focus on every point during the tournament.”

Kuai added: “We know our teammates and are excited to show our best in the final. It was a good start into a new Olympic period. I felt honored to receive the trophy from Chinese table tennis legend Zhang Xielin, who had a great performance in mixed doubles.”

After Friday's matches, Chinese table tennis players secured all other four titles in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles and women's doubles.

Chinese wildcard rider Xiang Peng continued his resounding journey at the China Smash, where the 21-year-old claimed a seven-set victory over 11th-seeded Truls Moregard of Sweden and met Lin Shidong in the men's singles semi-finals.

Xiang and Moregard fought fiercely, with the Swede having to take the score to 20-18 to win the fourth set. However, Xiang's steadier returns helped him win the deciding set 11-5.

Moregard's loss marked Swedish legend Jorgen Persson's final appearance with the country's men's team as head coach. The 58-year-old Swede said after Moregard's match: “I'm very happy to see the fans here. I also play with a lot of Chinese players like Wang Hao and Ma Long. Great China Smash. I was hoping to play but it was too late. I hope to see you somewhere.”

In another men's singles semi-final, Chinese veteran Ma Long will face off against his teammate Liang Jingkun.

Top-ranked Sun Yingsha eased past sixth-seeded Mima Ito of Japan in four straight sets to face qualifier Fan Siqi in the women's singles semifinals.

Also on Saturday, Wang Manyu and Chen Xingtong will battle for a place in the women's singles final, while the men's and women's doubles trophies will also be awarded.
