Week 6 college football games to watch feature SEC, Big Ten showdowns
October is here, but we still have a few weeks to wait for the biggest games that will determine the hunt for spots in the expanded College Football Playoff. Don't worry, though, because the week 6 list should still provide plenty of fun moments.
It'll be hard to top last week's Alabama-Georgia headliner, but with conference play in full swing, there's plenty of content for your viewing pleasure.
Here are the seven we've chosen to highlight, presented as always with the standard caveat that the critical, neutral observer should be prepared to switch channels if unexpected developments warrant it.
No. 9 Missouri at No. 21 Texas A&M
Time/TV: noon ET, ABC.
Why watch: This is the only Top 25 matchup on the Week 6 slate, but it's a big matchup in the busy SEC race. The Aggies opened with a loss to Notre Dame, but still has a clean conference record. The Tigers had to work overtime to get past Vanderbilt when we last saw them, so their fans have to hope they made good use of their open date to smooth some things over. Missouri QB Brady Cook and WR Luther Burden III have yet to unleash their full potential, and that won't be easy against the disruptive Aggies DE Nic Scourton. But Cook has other weapons at his disposal, such as WR Theo Wease Jr. and RB Nate Noel. The A&M offense doesn't have much flash potential, but mobile QB Marcel Reed's turnover-free play was key in last week's squeaker against Arkansas. Wherever Reed goes, he can track down Tigers LB Corey Flagg Jr. expect in the area.
Why it might disappoint: It probably won't be the most sharply played example of the sport. Both are among the most penalized teams in the league, so we can expect frequent flag stops. If anyone pulls out, it's more likely to be the Tigers, although they haven't exactly looked dominant against power conference competition.
Iowa ranked No. 3 in Ohio State
Time/TV: 3:30 PM ET, CBS.
Why watch: The Buckeyes easily passed their first Big Ten test of the campaign at Michigan State. They return home to Hawk eyeswhose stout defense always makes them a tough opponent. While the level of competition admittedly hasn't been the highest, Ohio State QB Will Howard and his dizzying array of playmakers have been virtually unstoppable thus far. Veteran LBs Jay Higgins and Nick Jackson lead a well-disciplined Iowa defense that will look to make the Buckeyes work for their yards. The Hawkeyes have been more competent on the offensive side of the ball this season with QB Cade McNamara healthy again. He will need to provide RB Kaleb Johnson with some level of air support to keep DB Sonny Styles and the excellent Buckeyes secondary from crowding the line of scrimmage.
Why it might disappoint: Quite simply, Iowa can't let this become a circuit. If the Buckeyes break a few long scoring drives early, it will be a long day in Columbus.
WEEKEND FORECAST: Expert picks for every Top 25 game in Week 6
PRICE TIME: The highs and lows of the first month of college football
No. 10 Michigan in Washington
Time/TV: 7:30 PM ET, NBC.
Why watch: There's surprisingly little buzz about this rematch of last year's national title game, although that's understandable since both programs have undergone major changes on the field and on the sidelines. These Wolverines won't let everything roll their way like last year's championship team, but they are doing enough to stay in the Big Ten hunt. They make their first trip to the league's new West Coast contingent, where the Huskies hope to bounce back after a frustrating loss at Rutgers. Michigan QB Alex Orji isn't going to broadcast it regularly, but he should do enough with the passing game to keep the lanes open for RBs Kalel Mullings and Donovan Edwards. Washington's Carson Bruener and Alphonzo Tuputala will lead the effort to keep them in the bottle. The Huskies had no trouble hitting the ball Scarlet Knights but could not complete the drives. QB Will Rogers and WR Denzel Boston are capable of making home connections at any time, as is RB Jonah Coleman, but DT Rayshaun Benny and the rest of Michigan's linemen are difficult to move.
Why it might disappoint: This won't be Alabama-Georgia. There could be the occasional breakthrough from a running back, but this seems to be one of those games where yards and points matter a lot. That's fine for Michigan, but Washington could steal a game like that too.
No. 11 Mississippi in South Carolina
Time/TV: 3:30 PM ET, ESPN.
Why watch: After playing through non-conference play, the high flyer Rebels ran into an unexpected problem when they dropped their SEC opener to Kentucky. They now find themselves in a virtual must-win situation when they visit the Gamecocks, who just weeks earlier demolished that same Kentucky team and nearly toppled LSU. Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart was unable to generate his usual number of long gainers last week, and Gamecocks DE Kyle Kennard will look to make sure that's the case again. After suffering an ankle injury against LSU, South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers sat out the team's win against Akron. He should be ready to return after an open week. He needs his mobility to avoid the rebels DE Princeley Umanmielen.
Why it might disappoint: That shouldn't happen unless a team is careless with the ball. Both offenses can stage a comeback if necessary, so a blowout in either direction seems unlikely.
No. 4 Tennessee in Arkansas
Time/TV: 7:30 PM ET, ABC.
Why watch: The Razorbacks can still shake up the SEC race after falling short against Texas A&M. However, their remaining schedule is a killer, starting with this home appointment with the volunteers. Tennessee can also hardly afford to have its own big tests ahead. The Vols kept things fairly conservative after taking the lead in Oklahoma. QB Nico Iamaleava plans to use more of the playbook here early on, though it certainly helps to have RB Dylan Sampson on hand to finish the drives. Arkansas will need a much cleaner game from flashy but turnover-prone QB Taylen Green, who will once again make extensive use of RB JaQuinden Jackson. On the defensive side, you'll probably hear the names of Razorbacks LB Xavian Sorey and Tennessee LB Arion Carter called out often.
Why it might disappoint: There is more than a little warmth here among the home team. If the Razorbacks fall behind and start pressing, things could snowball.
SMU at No. 22 Louisville
Time/TV: noon ET, ESPN.
Why watch: The Mustangs couldn't have asked for a better ACC debut last week as they dominated a faltering Florida State squad. They now face their first road test in their new league against the Cardinals, who are undoubtedly a little salty after missing an opportunity at Notre Dame. The SMU offense has been on a roll since Kevin Jennings took the full-time QB reins. His arsenal includes RB Brashard Smith and TE RJ Maryland Jr., all of whom will keep LB Stanquan Clark and the Louisville front busy. Cardinals QB Tyler Shough and his unit will be happy to be back home after getting banged up for the first time all season in South Bend. They will have to watch out for active DB Ahmaad Moses, who has three of the Mustang's nine picks.
Why it might disappoint: It will be interesting to see how both teams handle the current situation, the recent success for the Mustangs and the loss for the Cardinals. Neither side will come out close, but the level of execution must be sharp.
No. 8 Miami, California
Time/TV: 10:30 PM ET, ESPN.
Why watch: #ACCAfterDark? Well, just go with it as the Golden Bears play their first high-profile home game in their new conference. Cal's strong start was derailed a few weeks ago at Florida State, but they had last week off while the Hurricanes were in a four-quarter battle with Virginia Tech that was only decided when a somewhat controversial ruling from the replay booth went in their favor. The Golden Bears have struggled to gain yardage, with standout RB Jaydn Ott slowed by an ankle problem. He should be a complete go after the open date, and it would be a huge boost for QB Fernando Mendoza as he tries to solve LB Francisco Mauigoa and the Miami stoppers. Hurricanes fans have seen both sides of QB Cam Ward, whose high-risk, high-reward style is never boring. Making extensive use of WR Xavier Restrepo usually serves him well, although Cal CB Nohl Williams is just as aware of that.
Why it might disappoint: If we're honest, it probably will. As long as the Hurricanes don't help by giving the ball away, a few quick shots can put this ball on hold.
