Top junior tennis player joins UVA
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – One of UVA Tennis' newest players was a top recruit in the country, and you may also recognize him from an Amazon Prime documentary.
Stiles Brockett is originally from Virginia, but he says that's not the only reason he chose the Cavaliers.
To be honest, I was pretty picky about where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life, Brockett said. The coaches here reached out to me, and they were all supportive and believed in me a lot… I think that's why I ultimately made this decision.
Brockett was the No. 1 college recruit in the Mid-Atlantic and No. 8 in the country, according to him UVA biography.
Many of these junior players go straight to the pros, but not Brockett.
I think so much more now: Guys go to college and are super successful, Brockett said. I think that's a big thing for my parents, just like the academic part and getting a good education.
Over the summer, Brockett appeared in Top Class Tennis, a documentary that followed four elite junior players through tournaments and training.
Sports icons, such as Lebron James and Sloane Stephens, served as executive producers of the show. That meant a camera crew accompanied Brockett to practices, tournaments and even to his home in Fairfax.
It was all quite new to me, Brockett said. For example, it is a little different to always have a camera with you than at a normal tournament. But I think they did a great job.
The documentary has attracted some attention from his teammates.
“I got some stuff for it when I first got here, but it's fine,” Brockett said. I mean, they're all super supportive, and they all like it too, I hope.
Brockett was completely online in high school. Now he sometimes misses classes at UVA to go to tournaments like the Junior US Open.
“I have to catch up on a lot of homework and stuff, and explain to the teachers why I wouldn't be in class and stuff,” Brockett said.
There are also other disadvantages.
“I miss my dog a lot,” Brockett said.
But, he says, it's all worth it. Brockett already has a pair of collegiate wins.
“I think Charlottesville is such a fun city, and there are so many different things to do,” Brockett said. You meet so many new people, especially as freshmen, other athletes and things like that. So that's my favorite part.
