Hockey scores home win against USNTDP
KALAMAZOO, Mich. The Western Michigan hockey team opened the 2024-2025 season Saturday night with a 4-1 victory over the USNTDP at Lawson Arena.
Zach Nehring, Cole Crusberg-Roseen, Tristan Lemyre And Liam Valentine all scored for the Broncos. Cameron Rowe And Hampton Slukynsky interim in net. Slukynsky made eight saves, while Rowe made seven stops to take the win.
FIRST PERIOD
Team USA got the first shot of the game, but after that it was all Broncos. You Henricks And Zack Sharp had shots saved before Nehring tapped home a shot to put the Broncos up 1-0 less than five minutes into the game.
The Broncos took a cutting penalty midway through the period. Brian Kramer blocked the only USNTDP shot and the Brown and Gold returned to full strength.
Not long after, Crusberg-Roseen scored the second goal for the Broncos via a nice wrister from the right circle. That would ultimately be the winning goal for WMU. Tim Wash got the assist on goal.
Western Michigan would continue that two goal lead into the second 20 minutes.
SECOND PERIOD
After some back-and-forth action in the opening minutes, both teams went to penalties. WMU was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct, while Team USA was assessed a minor penalty.
During the 4-on-4 play, USNTDP was able to score and bring the match back within one goal. The Broncos wiped out the remaining time on the major penalty and returned to full strength.
Slukynsky would take the net midway through the period and not allow a goal for the remainder of the match. Just over 13 minutes into the second frame, USNTDP was assessed a minor penalty for hitting from behind.
About the power game, Alex Bump had two shots while Valente and Samuel Sjölund added one each. Team USA would escape the threat and return to full strength. WMU would return to the power play late in the period, carrying some time into the final 20 minutes.
THIRD PERIOD
USNTDP would kill the remaining time, and the Broncos would get their own punishment. Slukynsky made a pair of saves to keep WMU ahead, 2-1.
WMU began to take control after the game moved past the middle of the third period. The Broncos started the power play just under 11 minutes into the frame. Iiro Hakkarainen had a shot on the man advantage, with Washe drilling the post as time ticked down on the power play. Eventually, Team USA would return to full strength.
After a Nehring shot was saved, Lemyre fired a quick wrister from the American goaltender to extend the WMU lead to 3-1 with just over three minutes to play in the match.
Less than fifteen minutes later, Valente was released thanks to passes from Nehring and Sharp. He promptly lit the lamp to make the score 4-1 in favor of the Broncos. WMU would close out a three-goal win on opening night.
NEXT
Western Michigan begins the regular season this Friday evening against Ferris State at home. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM at Lawson Arena.
