Preseason Game Recap: Colorado Avalanche Drop Final Game to Utah Hockey Club to Finish 1-5
The Colorado Avalanche concluded their final preseason game with a second loss to the Utah Hockey Club.
After a one-sided defeat in the first game, the second rendition was more competitive, but ultimately ended 2-1 in favor of the NHL's newest club at Maverick Arena. Colorado finished the preseason with a 1-5 record.
It's not called preseason for nothing. It's a chance for the top athletes to get some time in the sun, while the established veterans get back into the grind of the game. Let's take a look at our improvers and snoozers.
Improvers
Ivan Ivan
Ivan may have the same first and last name, but he has a lot of advantage in his game. He's a machine that never stops, and it's that determination that allowed him to pounce on a rebound earlier in the night for Colorado's only goal of the game, which came after Connor Ingram had denied Joel Kiviranta's shot, but Ivan was there to pick up the trash. His forecheck forces opponents to cough up the puck and gives his team opportunities to score goals. Ivan plays very much like a younger version of Logan OConnor. The 22-year-old should be a lock for the center position on the fourth line, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
Malinsky himself
Malinski had a very quiet, but impressive showing in the preseason. He should be placed next to Calvin de Haan as a third-line defender. Malinski has earned his stripes. This is a kid who didn't get drafted and he really had to grind to get to this level. Now it's all about staying there and seeing what Malinski has to offer this season.
Snoozers
Alexander Georgiev
Alexandar Georgiev was terrible in the first period. I'm just going to say it. It wasn't just that he was bad, but in the final game of the preseason, when you're arguably fighting for the starting job against Justus Juice Annunen, who came off lights last Thursday against the Golden Knights, things look bad. Moreover, it is a contract year. Prove that you are worth the extension. The same issues were raised: 1. The abandonment of soft targets. 2. Too slow to respond. 3. Consistently inconsistent. The five-hole goal he allowed to Dylan Guenther is one of the worst goals you'll see from an NHL starter. It wasn't even close. Georgiev was caught napping like a malfunctioning robot. And again, with Annunen finishing strong, Jared Bednar could be faced with a tough decision. But if it were up to me, I'd choose Sam Dullard's doppelgänger.
Chris Wagner
Wagner didn't necessarily seem to be struggling, but it also looked like he didn't want to be there. Who could blame him? He was cleared off waivers earlier in the day and reassigned to the Colorado Eagles. You have to sympathize with Wagner; it's never easy to be sent back, but it's also an opportunity for him to learn more about himself. Let's see if he uses this as fuel to become a regular in the NHL. He's not done yet, but if there is a silver lining, he will be a dominant presence and a key contributor for the Eagles this season.

It's finally time for the regular season to start. The Avalanche open the 2024-2025 season Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas to take on the Golden Knights. Puck drop is at 8:00 PM MT in a matchup on TNT television. The game will also be available on MAX.
