Fourth-quarter goal pushes hockey past Princeton
Syracuse (8-3) clinched the game with goals in the third and 55th minutes Willemijn Boogert and van Kempen, respectively. Louise Pert was called to make one save in the game, as the defensive unit in front of her blocked four attempts.
Sunday's win was the second straight 2-1 victory at Coyne Stadium this weekend for the Orange, as Syracuse defeated the Cardinals of No. 16 Louisville on Friday afternoon.
Princeton (6-4) tied the game in the 36th minute when Anna Faulstich completed a pass for Beth Yeager. Tiger netminder Robyn Thompson made six saves in her 57 minutes, 11 seconds of work before being pulled for the extra court.
How it happened
- Syracuse wasted little time getting on the board Bo Madden dribbled along the baseline and slid over a pass to Boogert, who deflected the ball past Thompson to the back post for a 1-0 'Cuse lead in the third minute.
- Neither side scored another attacking chance until the Tigers' first corner of the day in the 12th minute, a chance that was blocked by a Syracuse defender.
- The Dutch team had opportunities on back-to-back penalty corners late in the frame, but neither chance found the net.
- It was much the same in the second quarter, as the first chance of the period came from Princeton 20 minutes in, producing Pert's only save of the afternoon. Syracuse took a 1-0 lead at halftime.
- The visiting team scored at 35:12 on a similar goal as the Dutch, but from the other side of the goal. Faulstich centered a pass to Yeager for the tying goal and the only goal of the third period.
- A yellow card at the end of the third stanza and an early green card, both against Syracuse, meant that the Dutch opened the final quarter with two players behind them. Syracuse successfully killed both penalty cards before returning to 11-aside hockey.
- In the ninth and final penalty corner of the match, Syracuse broke through Lottie Zomers sent a ball forward Annabelle Vossenaar's stick stop, allowing van Kempen's game-winner to take the lead with just over five minutes to play.
- Princeton pulled Thompson with two minutes to play, but a yellow card against the Tigers just 30 seconds later leveled the playing field as the Dutch held on for a 2–1 win in the top 20.
Behind the numbers
- Syracuse outscored the Tigers 12-10 and created eight chances on goal. Princeton managed just two shots on goal, one that scored and one that was saved by Pert.
- The penalty corners even totaled nine apiece, although Princeton held a slight 5-4 lead in the second half, including three in the fourth period.
- Syracuse won its third game against a top 20 opponent of the season, moving the team's record for the season against ranked opponents to 3–3.
- Summers scored her first points for the Dutch team with the winning penalty corner entry. Vossenaar was equal to the team leader with five assists.
- Syracuse moved into a tie for the all-time series with Princeton, which now sits at 13-13-0. The Dutch have won three straight against the Tigers, with all three wins coming in different cities (College Park, Maryland; Princeton, New Jersey; Syracuse, New York).
Next step for Syracuse
- The Dutch team will conclude two home weekends next week with another back-to-back ACC weekend.
- Syracuse hosts Stanford on Friday afternoon at JS Coyne Stadium for the first ACC meeting between the programs. The Dutch next welcome No. 20 California, another newcomer to hockey's premier conference, on Sunday. The playing times are set for Friday 4:00 PM and Sunday 12:00 PM.
