Japan upsets China by taking women's table tennis team title at Asian Championships

ASTANA – Japan defeated defending champion China 3-1 to claim the women's team title at the 27th Asian Table Tennis Championships on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day, Sun Yingsha, Wang Yidi and Chen Xingtong ensured China won 3-0 against Hong Kong, China, while Japan overpowered India 3-1 to reach the final.

China sent the same lineup for the final. With a busy schedule changing from the World Table Tennis (WTT) China Smash, which concluded on Sunday, the Chinese rowers were not in their best condition.

China suffered a blow early in the title race when Wang fell to Miwa Harimoto in full matches. Although Sun leveled the score with a 3-0 win over Mima Ito, China again found themselves in a subordinate position after Chen, who had replaced Wang Manyu in the pre-tournament squad, lost 3-1 to Miu Hirano .

Harimoto made a key contribution to Japan's victory as the 16-year-old defeated Sun 3-2 in the fourth match.

The men's team semi-finals and final will be held on Thursday, with China set to compete with South Korea for a place in the final.

Also on Wednesday, two Chinese pairs, Lin Gaoyuan/Wang Yidi and Lin Shidong/Kuai Man, reached the last 16 of the mixed doubles with back-to-back victories.
