Tennis trio represents CUI at the ITA National Tournament
IRVINE, California Three top tennis players from Concordia University Irvine will compete on the national stage of the ITA Cup this week in Rome, Georgia.
Concordia's Max Mueller and Felix Veyhle rose to the occasion in the men's doubles, securing their trip to Georgia after winning the ITA Regional Fall tournament held in Azusa in late September.
The pair even won their first match at the ITA Cup on Thursday, as they want to continue to make a name for themselves and their school. CUI faced Midwestern State's Stephen Slocombe and Germano Setti and defeated their opponents in a three-set thriller.
Mueller and Veyhlet won the first set 6-2, lost 6-7 (4-7) in the second and then achieved victory in epic fashion, winning 10-8 to break the tie.
The men went on to play Sebastian Rondon and Diego Duran of the University of West Florida in the quarterfinals on Friday at noon PT (3 p.m. local ET).
Completely American Sophie Rachel also qualified for the national tournament as an at-large bid in women's singles. Rachor is 29-13 overall in singles after her first two seasons at Concordia and was named a First Team All-PacWest selection after finishing 15-4 at the top spot last spring.
On Thursday in Georgia, Rachor won her first set against Angelina Linnikova of the University of North Georgia, but ultimately lost in three sets after her opponent bounced back with back-to-back victories. The final score was 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Rachor had great success at the ITA West Regional Tournament exactly one year after winning the doubles with former CUI teammate Tiffany Carrillo. This time, Rachor won her first three singles matches to reach the quarterfinals. She defeated Charlotte Downs of Cal State LA 6-2, 6-0 and also fended off Dominican Sofia Acuna. She defeated APU's Shannele Lopez 6-3, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
At a regional level, both Veyhle and Lemiel Kei Taira won their first two singles matches to advance to the Round of 16. Hawaii Pacific's Adam Vasir outlasted Vehyle 6-4, 3-6, 10-3, and Kei Taira was eliminated by Biola's Jules Zanarelli.
