Utah hockey fans smash stadium beer record during first game
The Utah Hockey Club, yes, that's their name, played their very first game on Wednesday (and won!). Do you know who also won? The beer sellers of the arenas, those broke Delta Centers' record for alcohol purchases during a sporting event.
Although this was literally the hockey team's first game, the Delta Center has been the legendary home of the NBA's Utah Jazz, who are older than me, for 33 years.

So yes, in just one day, hockey fans drank more beer in one night than all of the approximately 1,300 Jazz home games. Then we don't even count the play-off games!
The arena sold $120,000 worth of beer during Utah's first game.
It's not like beer prices have been jacked up to inflate that number either. From all accounts, the prices were in line with the typical costs that sports and concertgoers have become accustomed to.
This is a great sign for the NHL and the Salt Lake area after the NHL announced the new team in April 2024, which had relocated from Arizona. The Utah Hockey Club is only the second largest professional sports team among the four major leagues in the state. It's clear that the people there are more than willing to support another team, as evidenced by their passionate pursuit of drinking as many beers as possible in one evening.
Now if you're wondering why on earth a professional hockey team is called Hockey Club, it's because no one can make up their mind. It's that simple. The owner says there's no rush to land on an official nickname wants to make enough time for it for an important decision.
That said, in the end it will probably be the Yeti, Mammoth or another four that come through fans votes.
Perhaps one more should be added to the list of potential names: the Utah Guzzlers.
