Women's tennis ends autumn season with ITA Cup
ROME, Ga. The Gustavus women's tennis team concluded competition at the 2024 ITA Cup on Saturday afternoon, with the four Gusties competing in their final doubles matches of the national tournament. Karina Elvestrom (Fy., Minnetonka) and Kaya De Bruijn (Jr., Maasland, Netherlands) finished the tournament on a high note, winning their last doubles match of the fall.
Elvestrom started the day with a final singles match, facing Maegan Deng of the University of Redlands. Deng claimed set one 6-0, but the freshman fought back for a 6-3 win in set two. Set three was a battle between the two athletes, with Deng ultimately emerging victorious, 7-6, with a 7-3 lead in the breaker. Elvestrom concludes her first fall season as a Gustie with valuable national tournament experience, not to mention two All-America honors.
She and partner De Bruijn earned their first win of the weekend in the afternoon, defeating NYU's Siona Vallabhaneni and Victoria Wang. The Midwest regional champions posted a 6-3 victory in the first set, followed by a narrow 7-6 victory in the second, culminating in an 11-9 victory in the breaker.
Teammates Molly Austin (Jr., Arden Hills) and Allison Szalay (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa) fell in their consolation semifinal Saturday afternoon, dropping a two-set decision to Wesleyan's Renna Mohsen-Breen and Lane Durkin. Wesleyan claimed set one 7-5, followed by a 6-3 win in the second set to close out Gusties weekend in Georgia.
“It was a great weekend for all four of our players,” said Head Coach Jon Carlson '88. “Every match got better and better every day. It was really great to see Karina improve her game as the weekend went on, as well as both doubles teams. I know all of our players are very excited about the spring, based on how this fall went , just like me.”
