Prince William is introduced to American football

It was a park in Kennington, south London, rather than a fluorescent Super Bowl pitch, but the Prince of Wales has joined the growing numbers in Britain playing American football.

Prince William was given an “incredible” throwing arm as he played the role of quarterback slinging the ball to a teammate.

There are now 60,000 boys and girls in 650 schools in Britain playing the non-contact version of American football.

This version of the sport, called the NFL flag, will make its debut at the Olympics when the games take place in Los Angeles in 2028.

Prince William told Phoebe Schecter, captain of the British flag football team, that he had played American football when he was younger.

She suggested he move his hips more by “embracing your inner Shakira,” referring to the Colombian singer.

Perhaps the prince could have borrowed some moves from his father's impressive moves display of Samoan dances at a recent reception.

But Phoebe thought Prince William had potential for the tough game, even though the prince is better known for his support for the brand of football Aston Villa plays.

“Honestly, Prince William was amazing. His arm strength is unbelievable. When he ripped that first ball, I couldn't believe it,” Schecter said.

She also got technical with talking about fouls, handoffs and calling cadence, which in American football is the series of words shouted by the quarterback, rather than something more musical.

Prince William also met a convert to American football, Louis Rees-Zammit, who was a rugby player in Wales before joining the NFL team Jacksonville Jaguars.

The event in Kennington Park brought together children from Birmingham, Manchester and London.

And Prince William particularly commented on the broad appeal of the NFL flag version of the game: “It's so good to see all women getting more involved.”

There was also some good parenting advice from Prince William when he was presented with a football for his children.

“Never go home empty-handed, that's a crucial motto. They'll love that, we'll do some practice at home – see how many windows I can smash,” he said.
