Park Board must decide whether to convert tennis courts to pickleball
The city's Parks and Recreation Board will soon decide between converting some of the tennis courts at Leahy Park and James Park to pickleball courts, converting all of the tennis courts at James Park for pickleball use or creating dedicated new pickleball courts at Chandler Park.
Concerns from pickleball players, tennis players and neighbors have complicated the decision. Those who have spoken at recent board meetings have supported pickleball courts in Evanston, but many disagree on where the courts should be.
We're in a situation, said Parks and Recreation Director Audrey Thompson. No one really wants pickleball around them.
The board has thought about it before several other parks in addition to the three currently on the table. The city ultimately determined they were not suitable for renovation because the number of pickleball courts they could accommodate did not allow for tournaments, Thompson explained.
Parks and Recreation has held approximately ten community engagement meetings with stakeholders over the past 60 days, seeking the best solution for everyone involved.
Pickleball in both Leahy Park and James Park
Neighbors of Leahy Park spoke out against converting the tennis courts there into pickleball courts, citing concerns about noise and parking.
So far, I haven't had to doubt the future of the neighborhood, says resident Alex Gunn, who lives next to Leahy Park. Now I really have to reconsider what the next twenty years will look like.
Gunn's concerns about noise were echoed by others during public comments.
There's something about the kind of noise that comes with the sport of pickleball that's really irritating to those who don't participate in the activity, another neighbor said.
Several pickleball players themselves also expressed disapproval of the courts at Leahy and James Park during public comments, preferring a dedicated location for the social game over one that has to share space with tennis.
Pickleball at James Park
Debbie Cassell, president of the Evanston Community Tennis Association, said she is concerned about the loss of tennis at James Park, since that venue can host official tennis league and tournament matches.
It is said that there are not many tennis players in Evanston. That couldn't be further from the truth, Cassell said. We have been driven to other communities by the condition of the courts and by pickleball.
Thompson said she has spoken with city staff, and they are considering using the courts at Lovelace Park for tennis if they move forward with converting the courts at James Park for pickleball. Previously, the Lovelace courts were used for much city programming, which prevented tennis players from scheduling tournaments there.
One problem with converting all the courts at James Park to pickleball, Thompson said, is that the south side of Evanston would have no tennis courts at all. But Robert Bush, the administration's vice president, said he still had “strong support” for the James Park option.
He attended all but two community engagement meetings, and he said he heard only a few people concerned about their ability to walk to a tennis court. The issue of a few should not undermine the desire of many for dedicated pickleball courts, he argued.
Special Courts in Chandler Park
This option, likely the most expensive, would keep the two sports separate without removing tennis from south Evanston.
However, it would take money away from rebuilding other tennis courts, some of which are in completely unplayable condition.
The third choice is the most expensive and limits us, Thompson said. We want to be good stewards of your money.
The board plans to schedule a special meeting next week to vote between these three options proposed by city staff.
