Table tennis is making a comeback in Brandon – Brandon Sun
Visitors to Brandon University's Healthy Living Center could hear the sounds of serves, volleys and blocks on Saturday, but the source was not from a Bobcats volleyball game.
The Manitoba Table Tennis Association gathered 55 players of varying ages and levels for the MBLL Assiniboine Open tournament from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Henry Champ Gymnasium.
A maximum of 10 matches were in progress at the same time. Some players showed their stamina by sustaining long rallies, while others showed the control and technique needed to score improbable corner shots.

The association's executive director, Carlos Cuadra, told the Sun it was the largest tournament of its kind held in Brandon in years. He said they wanted to hold a tournament in the Wheat City to grow the game throughout the province.
A smaller Brandon Open event was held a few weeks ago, but Saturday's event welcomed competitors from across Manitoba and even a few from Saskatchewan.
According to Cuadra, the roster for the Assiniboine Open included a member of the under-15 girls national team and several players ranked in Canada's top 100.
There were both singles and doubles tournaments with players divided by age, and some open tournaments without restrictions, as well as a hard bat tournament, using a different type of paddle.
The hope is that the local table tennis community will grow and enable the association to make this tournament an annual event.
Local player Taras Lychuk said that years ago there was a club based outside the university, but it had been dormant for some time. He volunteers his time to try to get a local chapter again.
I've been playing ping pong since I was a teenager and I'm almost 50 now, said Lychuk, who also competed in both recent local tournaments. I enjoy the sport immensely.
While there are still some details to be worked out, the Brandon club plans to start holding bi-weekly sessions for both new and experienced players at the Healthy Living Center in a few weeks.
That way, local players don't have to travel to Winnipeg or elsewhere for some games.
The addition of a Brandon club is an attractive prospect for another local player, Jasmin Jimeno, who competed in both the open singles and open doubles tournaments on Saturday.
She said she started playing in high school in the Philippines.
When she first arrived in Brandon about a year ago, she said she was looking for a team but was disappointed to find there wasn't one and she didn't want to travel to Winnipeg to play. The recent Brandon tournaments are the first time she has played in a long time, she said.
That's why I'm really excited when they actually get one here at the Healthy Living Center, she said. I'm really glad they're hosting this tournament here and not in Winnipeg.
Cuadra said he hopes the seed Lychuk plants will grow into something bigger. If Brandon gets a bigger player community, he says there's an opportunity to host more tournaments.

Table tennis is a great sport, he says. It is accessible to all ages and gaming levels. It's perfect for winter because you can play it all season long. The other thing you have is it has a mix of cognitive and physical benefits.
Because all racquet sports are interconnected, Cuadra says knowledge of other games such as badminton, squash and pickleball can help people acclimatize to table tennis.
