Former Penn State football players charged with rape and other sex crimes
Former Penn State football players Jameial Lyons and Kaveion Keys are both accused of rape and other sex crimes, according to docket briefs made public Tuesday. Lyons and Keys were dismissed from the university in August.
Lyons faces charges of rape, consensual deviate sexual intercourse and two counts of aggravated indecent assault without consent. He also faces charges of indecent assault and invasion of privacy. Charges against Keys include crimes of rape, aggravated indecent assault without consent and sexual assault. He is also charged with an offense of indecent assault.
Both files list July 7 as the date of the alleged violations. Arraignments will take place Wednesday afternoon in State College. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 30.
We are aware of the serious charges against Mr. Keys and Mr. Lyons, who are no longer enrolled at the university, Penn State Athletics said in a statement to The Athletics. The safety of our community is our top priority, and Penn State takes any report of sexual assault or misconduct very seriously and investigates all reports.
It was not clear Tuesday whether Lyons or Keys were represented.
Penn State football coach James Franklin will meet with the media Wednesday evening during his usual post-practice availability.
Lyon and Keys were temporarily suspended in the summer for what a spokesperson for the football program described as a personal matter. Neither was present on the first day of practice on July 31. Teammates and coaches had not talked about either player during the preseason when addressing their specific position groups. By August 3, both were no longer on the list and Franklin had no questions about their dismissals from the university.
Both Lyons and Keys came to Penn State as scholarship players and were expected to be major contributors this season. Last year, Lyons, a defensive end from Philadelphia, appeared in eight games as a freshman and had 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Keys, a linebacker from Virginia, redshirted last season.
